Aphasia is a general term describing the loss or absence of language abilities.

Dysphasia is a related term meaning difficulties with or partial loss of language skills.

Aphasia and dysphasia can include the inability to communicate with speech and language (expressive aphasia or dysphasia) and the inability to understand and process language (receptive aphasia or dysphasia).

Aphasia and dysphasia are usually classified in terms of specific areas of neurological damage, impaired sensory and motor functions or particular linguistic skills which are lacking or diminished.
