Rett Syndrome is a progressive neurological disorder which almost exclusively affects girls and up to 1 in 10000 births. The condition is generally diagnosed as a result of regression or deterioration in toddlerhood after a year or two of normal development. Rett Syndrome is a complex disorder sharing some symptoms of autism and cerebral palsy. Rett Syndrome is associated with growth retardation, severe to profound learning disabilities, significant communication impairment often alongside additional social and behavioural difficulties. Around half of children with Rett Syndrome are able to walk but gross-motor problems and involuntary movements are usual and gait is generally unsteady. Physical impairments such as loss of muscle tone and scoliosis often progress with age. Around half of people with Rett Syndrome (probably a lower incidence in young children) are affected by epilepsy.
