Down's Syndrome (Trisomy 21) is a caused by the presence of an extra chromosome 21. The incidence of Down's Syndrome is around 1 in 1000 births.
Down's Syndrome is associated with moderate to severe learning disabilities.
Mosaic Down's syndrome is a rare form where whilst many cells are affected by trisomy, a significant number are not. Mosiac Down's is usually characterised as less severe in terms of its physical effects and the likely range of associated learning disabilities.
Children with Down's syndrome represent a considerable range of capabilities, but most children should learn to communicate effectively and read and write with appropriate support over time.
Around a third of children with Down's Syndrome have heart defects, mostly minor with many rectified early in life, but as a matter of course teachers should seek the advice of parents/medics regarding any precautions or extra-dilligence needed in PE.
Children with Down's syndrome are frequently victims of unhelpful stereotyping, especially assumptions about personality and behaviour but also general capability and academic expectations all of which vary greatly in practice.
