Dyslexia is a term commonly used for a specific learning difficulty or one of several specific learning difficulties which adversely affect reading and/or writing.
Early identification of children with significant literacy difficulties is critical to effective intervention and such children should be referred to an Educational Psychologist for a specific diagnosis as soon as possible.
Diagnosis should always be at the expense of LEAs, but in some of the less effective Authorities parents choose to speed the process by arranging for private assessment. Parents choosing to take the private route should carefully research the qualifications of practionners and the methodologies they employ - several well-marketed and expensive dyslexia interventions in recent years have proven ineffective or misguided.
