Semantic Pragmatic Language Disorder is sometimes considered an autistic spectrum disorder but also viewed as a discrete specific learning difficulty which can occur in the absense of other autistic symptoms or impairments. Children with SPD/SPLD have some measure of difficulty in grasping both the conventions of social language (pragmatics) and in meaning of language (semantics) especially where usage strays from the literal. Difficulties with turn-taking, interruptions, keeping conversation on topic and a tendancy towards perseverant talk are common indicators of the pragmatic component of the disorder. Difficulty with receptive understanding of non-literal language, use of words incorrectly, reliance on limited and concrete core vocabulary or 'phrasebook', invention of words and generally poor language skills are common indicators of the semantic component.
